This is evident with the name which is derived from the French term crochet which translates to “small hook”.

During the potato famine in Ireland during the 1840s, there was a great deal of suffering and poverty around Ireland. The Ursuline sisters set up crochet centres around the land which produces crochet items which were then sold to rich English aristocrats to provide a steady income to many Irish families.

3. It Has Vague Origins

The first appearance of the word crochet and instructions for the technique were first printed in 1823 in a Dutch magazine called Penélopé. There were 5 differently styled purses shown in the magazine along with instructions on how they can be made. Despite this, origins of the technique are vague with some claiming that it originated in Arabia where it followed along Arab trade routes while others believe that it originated in South America.

4. The Longest Chain Is 130 Kilometres Long!

One of the best facts about crochet is that the longest crochet chain in the entire world is a staggering 130km (80.78 miles) long. Made by Frenchwoman Anne Vanier-Drüssel, the crochet chain took just over 5 months to complete starting on the 15th of June 2008 and finishing on November 26th, 2008.
